The yellow ipe, also known in Brazil as aipê, ipe-white, ipe-mamono, ipe-cassava, ipe-gold, ipe-brown, ipe-vacariano, ipe-tobacco, ipe-do-cerrado, ipe-golden, ipê-da-serra, ipezeiro, pau-d'arco-Amarelo, taipoca or just ipê (scientific name: Handroanthus albus) is a tree of the genus Handroanthus. It can reach 30 meters in height and 60 centimeters in diameter, and is deciduous. Yellow flowering starts at the end of August, the species is hermaphrodite, fruiting occurs between September and February, depending on the region, cultivated trees begin to reproduce at the age of three. The specific name "albus" stems from the whitish appearance of young leaves.
It occurs naturally in the semideciduous seasonal forest, Araucária Forest and in the Brazilian cerrado, in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Goiás and Serras do Espírito Santo. Native also in part of Argentina and Paraguay.
