Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at one of my home breaks. It was at Glenashley beach. The ocean is forever changing and always unique so very shot is different and unique.

Time

This is definitely one of my favorite shots, not just because it's aesthetically pleasing but because of the story behind the photograph. I had been watching this specific swell mutate and grow for two weeks before it arrived. I had gone for a surf that morning in a more sheltered place as it was too big everywhere else. After the surf, I knew that I couldn't miss this opportunity as the wind picked up offshore and the waves were around 8-10ft, which is not so common at this break. I grabbed my mom's Camera and went rushed down. I was down there for a few hours trying to catch this photo. I was there around 2 pm if I remember correctly. This swell was very rare as a 21 second swell period comes every few years. When I saw the forecast, I knew it was something I could not miss.

Lighting

The whole atmosphere of the day was dramatic. There was a lot of spray in the air which made the photos very hard to capture as some could be overexposed or would not focus. I got lucky with this photo as after a few hours in the sun of capturing different waves this one rolled through showing off. The day was very bright because of the spray and sun.

Equipment

I used my mom's camera, a Cannon EOS 7D, with a 70-300mm lens.

Inspiration

I have been surfing and been diving and living in and with the ocean my whole life. With being a surfer and free diver and spending so much time in the sea, I have always had an eye for little things that the average person will not notice about it. I want to share my passion and love for the ocean with everyone. So I try to capture its raw beauty and share it so that everybody can appreciate what we have right in front of us.

Editing

Yes, I did have to do some as the day was very bright, and there was a lot of sea mist in the air, so I had to bring down the exposure so that the wave was sharper. I also took the saturation down and vibrance to be black and white, which adds a massive dramatic effect on the photo.

In my camera bag

I don't have any as I borrow my mom's camera, so it's just the camera and the lens.

Feedback

If anyone wants to start taking ocean images I suggest that you just sit and watch the ocean, you will begin to notice the little things, just try watch and learn how the ocean moves and how it acts on different conditions, always have your camera with you and ready as the ocean is forever changing. You never know what it will present you with. Go down and start shooting; the longer you spend at the ocean, the more in tune you will become with it.
