There are a handful of apex predators on this planet that have interested me since my childhood. Polar bears, saltwater crocodiles, great white sharks and leopard seals are in this group. These magnificent animals just grab my attention and my imagination.
Leopard seals primarily inhabit the Antarctic pack ice and are possibly the only seal species to regularly hunt warm blooded prey. I photographed this medium sized female this morning (October 2nd 2020) on an Otago beach in Southern New Zealand whilst working with data collecting marine biologists from the University of Otago. Somewhere in the region of 250kg to 300kg and 2.5 to 3 metres of seal is attached to those massive jaws. Yikes!
What a beauty!
