Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home studio in Bridgend, South Wales. It was taken on the 23rd April 2020 when we in the UK were in the midst of a national lockdown.

Time

The photo was taken at 18:39 on a Thursday. The model is my wife who was working from home at the time and I had to wait for here to finish work before explaining the concept, preparing and taking the shot.

Lighting

I wanted a fairly dramatic and contrasty feel for the image. with the same light on the face of the model and the mask she is holding in her hand. The lighting is pretty straightforward using one softbox on a strobe.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5DRs and a 70-200mmF2.8 Canon zoom shot at 70mm and f8. !00 ISO and 1/125s. The camera was handheld. The lights I use are PixaPro Lumi ll 200.

Inspiration

I was taking a series of images over the course of many weeks to capture the national lockdown at my home. The model is my wife and while she is a very strong and independent lady who looks after us all, there was a very real concern at the time about the Coronavirus and what it would mean for our family. I wanted to capture the worries and concerns that she had for family and health whilst also showing the brave face that she shows to the world so that our children don't worry too much so that their mental health and well being is her first concern.

Editing

This is a composite image made up of to different images taken just minutes apart. I used photoshop to bring the two images together with layers. I use Luminar's portrait function to enhance eyes while blemishes and final editing is done using Photoshop CC.

In my camera bag

Along with my Canon 5DRs I may well keep a number of lenses in my bag. For portraits at home I would use the 70 - 200mm f2.8 lll which is a fantastic lens and works very well with this 50 megapixel camera. I also use a Canon 50mm f1.4 for some portraits which gives incredible results from a lens that I bought second hand for just £90. When I go out with a bag, it very much depends on what I am going to do. For outdoor portraits I would certainly take the same lenses as I use at home but for landscapes I would take Canon 16 - 35mm and also 24 - 70mm zoom lenses for their versatility and quality. I use Lee filters for landscape, manfrotto tripod and a cheap remote trigger. I use a Tenba bag which I love as it is very comfortable to use and perfect for longer hikes.

Feedback

Planning is the key. I had this shot planned for some time so that by the time my wife was ready to model I knew exactly how the shoot was going to go.
