Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a camping trip to Blutkoppe in Naukluft Park. It is a very isolated place full of surprises. The Naukluft Park is situated in the west of Namibia. This part (desert) is extremely dry but is also home to a fair bit of game.

Time

In Namibia you get the most beautiful sunsets. This place we camp is well known for its granite outcrops and beautiful quiver trees (Aloe dichotoma). Wintertime the sun sets round about 18h00 and I took this photograph around 15h36, which gave perfect shadows and light to the photo.

Lighting

This photo was taken in natural light at sunset (ISO 100)

Equipment

I used a Nikon D5100 with a 35mm 1,8 lens.

Inspiration

Quiver trees can grow up to 5 meters and are very drought resistant (they store large quantities of water in their spongy fibre branches. They have these beautiful white stems with a bit of leaves on the top. The San people (Bushmen) once used the branches from these trees to make their quivers. These tree are endangered here in Namibia, and I love to photograph trees.

Editing

I found the black and white version was more interesting as my color photo, due to the fact you saw the "nakedness" of this beautiful tree Otherwise no other post-processing was done.

In my camera bag

I change to a full frame camera (Nikon D750) in the meantime, and love landscapes. I always take my 14 -24 2.8, as well as my 70 - 200 2.8 lens on my trips. Super landscapes in Namibia. Cleaning equipment because we have a lot of dust in the desert - and always a bottle of water....

Feedback

With objects far away in Namibia you need a good zoom lens. Especially in the northern part of Namibia - for wildlife especially. A polarizer is also very handy. Our sunsets are really golden sunsets - clear skies - beautiful sand dunes and fabulous wild life.
