In this shot I wanted the model (in this case) Breeonna to show a sense of strength that even in this relaxed pose doesn't by any means mean she is weak or have a lack of confidence, but exudes it!
I used my Nikon d7200 with a 55mm Nikor lens in capturing this portrait. All props to Miss Minter for more than pulling off the look I wanted to capture.

Behind The Lens

Location

First of all I'm a self taught photographer and still have lots to learn. I humbly appreciate this opportunity that I've been given here on Viewbug.com to share what I know and about this photo. This was taken in September of 2020 on the stair case of St. Paul's Cathedral in Pittsburgh PA.

Time

It was an early September morning and started off a little chilly. My subject a Miss. Breeonna Minter who is working on becoming a model allowed me to do a shoot of her so we drove the 35 miles to Pittsburgh to get started around 8-9 AM. I wanted to catch the early morning light before it got to bright and would wash out the details. The sun was blocked enough by the buildings around us and still casting a hint of golden light and I pretty much went with it.

Lighting

Not much that I could share on the lighting. There was just the right amount of light that it didnt wash out any color and I had no need for flash that I could see at the time. I had enough contrast and color and the shadows where just black enough. I knew if I had to I could bump up the ISO if I needed to but it wasn't necessary. In some of the other shots of Miss Minter I needed to up my f-stop a smidge but I wanted to get through this shoot before the sun got to bright on this morning.

Equipment

I used my Nikon d7200 with my 18-55mm AF- P Nikkor f/3.5 - 5.6G lens And shot it at f/5.6 and an ISO of 200. I used an old Velbon tripod that I've had for over 40 years. And my shutter speed was 1/45's

Inspiration

I wanted to show the confidence and strength of the young black woman and that beauty and strength and confidence and integrity and intelligence can all be rolled into one. And I believe Miss. Minter exuded it in her pose and look. I wanted her to show a look of a young career woman in a time of a restful pose but never letting her guard down. And I believe she nailed it!

Editing

Just a slight adjustment of the white balance and contrast on Photo Shop Elements.

In my camera bag

My old Nikon D90 with an AF-S Nikkor 18-105mm 3.5 - 5.6G ED VR lens. Also I have my Nikon D7200 as well as a AF- Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4.5-6.3G ED lens. Two K&F Concept ND filters. As well as a few other small accessories and my new K&F Concept tripod with detachable monopod.

Feedback

All I can say is start by early planning. Check your local weather forecast depending on what you wish to shoot and be mentally ready for whatever comes at you. Have a check list if need be of things you wish to bring with you. Have...(in this case) a good understanding on what your subject (model) wish to achieve as well as what you as well as the photographer want to accomplish. Then take the time to enjoy the day! Take it all serious because obviously both parties wish to have a great final outcome, but have fun and talk to one another. And you'll find that it makes it a fantastic experience and a day that goes by before you know it and you want to do it again and again!
