This photo was taken in Suttons Bay, MI. My daughter and I made a day out of going to Suttons Bay. We arrived early evening. I took some photos and the sun was still high and hot. We decided to have dinner at a local eatery and wait for the golden hour. We had a wonderful time at Leabo Farms in Northwest MI! Definitely will go back next year. This was also a pandemic photo!Time
My daughter and I headed out about 2pm. Its a couple hour drive from our home town of Midland MI. We arrived at about 5pm. I snapped this beauty about 5:45pm. I was sweaty from the sun and walking through the fields, so we decided to leave for a little bit and grab a bite to eat. We refueled and went back for some portraits I took of my daughter in the sunflowers. We had a wonderful day!Lighting
It was a beautiful sunny day! The light was wonderful for these sunflower captures! I love how the sun was coming leaking through the sunflowers. It was all natural light for these beauties.Equipment
I used my Nikon D-7200 and my Sigma 105mm macro lens! I was on my trusty tripod of course. My lens is a little heavy and I shake a little so I take no chances. I use my tripod most of the time. I like a nice sharp image.Inspiration
I was inspired by looking online at all the sunflower fields in MI. I found Leabo farms and was in love with the photos they had posted on their website. Plus it was free to go. This family plants the sunflowers just so everyone can enjoy them. It was a joy to meet them. I do a lot of flower photography, the sunflower is inspiring all on its own.Editing
I do a little post processing in Luminar 4 program. I did crop this one for the effect I was looking for. I brought up the structure and details enhancer at bit and erased some little tiny bits off the sunflower and it was good to go.In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon D-7200. I carry my Sigma 105mm F2.8macro lens and filters for it. I also have my Nikon 50mm F1.8, I have a Nikon 55mm-300mm F4.5-5.6 lens and also have my 18mm-140mm F3.5-5.6 kit lens. I also have a big flash in my bag, just in case I need it.Feedback
Plan for your outing. I always check the weather up until the day we are leaving. We live in MI and the weather is always changing. Make sure your batteries are charged up and you have extra. Use different lens for different looks! Bring filters for that sunny weather. I used mine because it a open field. Plus you better colors that way. Just shoot and always have fun!
