Behind The Lens

This photo was taken in the forest near my home where I have the pleasure of taking my dogs on a walk every day. I saw this patch of moss a few days earlier, and knew I just had to take some photos in this small clearing!
The photo was taken in the afternoon, when the light was already softly shining through the trees so I could get a nice backlit mood.
My favorite kind of lighting is working with backlight, to illuminate the subjects and separate them from the background. I made sure to keep the sun completely opposite me while capturing moments between the two dogs. I only used natural light.
This was shot with my Canon EOS 6D and the Canon 85mm f1.8. It is my favorite combination to use in portrait shots.
These two dogs are father & son, and I wanted to show their relationship and some interactions between them. Sometimes you just have to wait for the perfect moment and be ready at the right time.
I accentuated the backlight and the vignette to keep more focus on the subjects. A bit more contrast helps to keep the dogs' coat nice and shiny black, and the color correction helps to make the picture feel complete. I also retouched the hand of the owner out of the side of the frame.
In my camera bag
I also take my Canon EOS 6D, my favorite lens is the Canon 85mm f1.8 which I always have on. For wide angle shots (dogs from above, in a bigger landscape) I like to use my Sigma 35mm f1.4 ART, and for action shots the Canon 200mm f2.8. Otherwise I only bring cleaning cloths for the lenses, and toys/squeakers to get or keep the dogs attention :)
Make sure you find your favorite position first, but be also ready to compromise when it comes to capturing moments. Give the models the time the need, so the interaction is natural! And never give up trying if it doesn't work out the first time.
