Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a photo studio in Paris, it's an fashion editorial for magazine.

Time

We started in the morning around 10am, and finished around 3pm I think.

Lighting

Because there is a big window on the right side of the studio, and I want this editorial to be soft and romantic in a way with a bit film photography effect, so I used only natural light with a big reflector on the left.

Equipment

The camera I use now is Canon 5D mark IV, mostly f/2.8 24-70mm or f/2.8 70-200mm. I don't really use tripod for fashion since I move a lot during the shoot. But I want to emphasize that which camera you use is not important, but maybe "Full-Frame" is very important to have a great quality of photos.

Inspiration

I wanted to have a project to show my photography style and art taste, which is mysterious, romantic and soft. And I never tried full-white series, so I created this editorial {White Moon}. Even it's not entirely white at the end (finding the outfits can be challenging) but still the result is 80-90% of what I was looking for.

Editing

Yes I do all the post-process by myself, from LR color editing to PS retouching.

In my camera bag

I really like to keep my equipment simple (and light if possible) so usually just camera with f/2.8 24-70mm (or only f/1.4 50mm). But for fashion I will also bring 70-200mm just in case. And a small reflector.

Feedback

I think for photographers, except knowing what kind of light you need for the shoot, but also knowing how to direct the model is very essential. You will need to communicate and direct the model into the mood you want to create, so she can keep generating the right movement you need. As well as how you design the visual for the shoot, colors of background, outfits are all important elements to it.
