Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my garden at my home. I try to have plants that attract hummers and butterflies around my garden. In this shot I was playing around with a fast shutter speed and was quite pleased when I was able to capture this hummer going in for a feast. Hand held camera.

Time

This photo was taken in the morning around 8:00 AM. The hummers love to feed when it is cooler (mornings and early evenings). I would venture out in the mornings trying to get close enough to them to be able to take a good action shot.

Lighting

The lighting in the mornings in my garden is usually just perfect. My garden faces East, so I get the benefit of the rising sun. I'm able to experiment with full sunlight, as well as shadows this time of day.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D750 with a AF-S Nikor 28-300 mm lens. No tripod, just hand-held. Shutter speed: 1/4000 sec.

Inspiration

I am a novice and constantly learning. These hummers were a perfect opportunity to practice with fast shutter speeds and morning light. I love these little tiny hard-working birds, and I love to be able to photograph the beautiful detain in their feathers.

Editing

I always post process to enhance features I want to stand out. I most often just use Photoshop Elements, and sometimes include edits with Topaz Studio.

In my camera bag

My go-to lens is the Nikor 28-300 mm. I also try to carry a tripod with me, but many times don't use it because I'm usually trying to capture images that crop up without notice.

Feedback

Just keep trying a playing around with your camera settings and shutter speeds. Lighting is important, but can be enhanced on post editing.
