Behind The Lens

Location

This images was created just outside of Mandeville in the parish of Manchester, Jamaica. It was a long drive from Kingston but it was well worth it.

Time

This was 9:30 on a sunny morning. This was just after a lengthy lockdown for Covid in July and some of the restriction had eased.

Lighting

With the day as bright as it was I needed to have strong light to do battle with the sun. I chose to use the Flashpoint XPLOR 600 for the lighting in order not to blow the sky out.

Equipment

For this shoot, I use Canon 5D Mark iv and the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L. For lighting I used Flashpoint XPLOR 600 to add extra light on the model.

Inspiration

This was shoot was planned months before, as far back as January 2020 but kept delaying for one reason or the other. Then just as we finally made plans to do the shoot, Covid-19 was upon us and the country went into lockdown islandwide. It was only after those restriction had ease, we took the opportunity do do the shoot as quickly as possible. There was so much more we wanted to do but limited ourselves to what we could do at short notice and restrictions.

Editing

My post production was done in Lr and Ps (Lightroom and Photoshop). A bit of dodge and burn with some color grading. A little bit frequency separation to clean up any pimples on the model.

In my camera bag

I pack my trusty 50mm f/1.4 and my 85mm f/1.8. Prime lenses just make life easier. Depending on my plans I will take my 70-200mm f2.8, my Tonika 16-28mm f/2.8. Tripod for Landscape shots and Flashpoint XPLOR 600 or Flashpoint eVOLV 200 TTL for extra lighting on an outdoor shoot along with Canon 7D Mark ii or 5D Mark iv.

Feedback

For this particular time of day, strong counter lighting is needed if you plan to keep the sky as natural as possible. Or place your camera in a tripod and do a composite post-production. As for the shoot itself, i always say scouting location and planning is key to create great shots, still the unexpected is great too but those are mostly by chance and still comes with a plan.. :)
