This was my second attempt at making ganache filled chocolates. The problem with attempting to learn to make chocolate shells in the middle of winter in a cold environment is that my chocolate set before I even got it into the mould. I had to crank the house up to 22 degrees C just so I had time to actually work with the chocolate. I am very proud of the result however.

Behind The Lens

Location

My partner and I are both creative people so our house is kind of chock a block full of paraphernalia related to our various hobbies. I wish I had room for a studio but my so called "Studio" in this case consisted of a dining chair pushed up against the back of the couch so that it caught the light streaming in through the dining room window, a white sheet that usually stops the cats from clawing our couch and a serving board that my partner made. Sadly I couldn't even find enough space to set up the lights for this one.

Time

It was about 4pm by the time that I finished making the chocolates so I was looking for a quick easy way to capture my creation without having to clean up the mess that I had just made only to create a new mess in its place. The tea cup was one that had been recently washed and not put away yet and the "tea" is actually the leftover soup from the 2 minute noodles I had been snacking on.

Lighting

My lighting equipment was out in the garage with several not quite finished garden beads between me and it. Plus there wasn't much room beside my makeshift "Studio" to fit any lighting anyway, so this is just the light from the afternoon sun that was shining through the big glass doors in my dining room and the ambient light from the light coloured walls in the rest of the room.

Equipment

Due to lack of room this shot was taken handheld with my 5D Mk IV and my 50mm "nifty 50" lens.

Inspiration

The main point of this photo was simply to showcase my new hobby. I am learning to make gourmet chocolates and this was my first attempt. I am pretty proud of the result, given that it was my first attempt, so I decided I needed to brag about it somehow and how better to brag about a great looking chocolate than a great photo of said great looking chocolate. :)

Editing

I really only did the basic post processing on this one. I played with the contrast and highlights a bit but since it was a studio setting I was able to do most of the work in camera, meaning that the final image didn't need much touching up.

In my camera bag

My day bag goes everywhere with me so I need to keep it fairly light and simple so that I can carry it easily. The only lens I can fit on the camera while it is in the bag is the 50mm so it is my go to lens and I use it a lot. I also carry my 24-105mm lens so I can get a wider variety of shots while I am out and about. Apart from that it just contains some cleaning equipment and spare memory cards. My big bag however contains a larger portion of my kit including an extra camera, Canon 700D with 250mm-500mm lens attached for wildlife opportunities, my 100mm macro lens, my 14-70mm lens for wide angle and night photography, an array of remote shutters and off camera flash connectors, a couple of flashes, my tripod, more memory cards, more cleaning equipment etc. This bag I take with me when I go out specifically to take photos or on holiday so that I can be prepared for any opportunity that might arise.

Feedback

When it come to food photography I prefer to make my photos look like they might have come out of a real situation where they are half eaten or have somehow been enjoyed. I love the look of perfectly formed sweets and things like that but I just find that some of them look too perfect to touch and you don't want to eat it because you will spoil it. I am a big sweet tooth so I love looking at my sweets but the most important part is eating them too.
