This photo was taken just before sunrise at Porthcawl. The lighthouse was built in 1860 and is a well photographed structure for South Wales' photographers.Time
I had set up my camera on a tripod in readiness to get the sun rising through the low clouds. There are many images taken of Porthcawl lighthouse with massive waves rising up to two or three times the height of the lighthouse. This was taken well before high tide, I was there for the sunrise and I wasn't expecting any high waves so you can imagine my shock when this wave came over the top of the break-sea and soaked me.Lighting
I was lucky here. I had set my camera up ready for the sunrise and exposed for the lovely orange sky that was already visible. When this wave appeared, it was just pure luck that the exposure worked for the whole scene and the shutter speed showed movement in the water.Equipment
Shot on a Canon 5D mk 3. Canon 24 - 70mm zoom lens at 24mm. ISO 800, f9, 1/40 secInspiration
This is a well known spot for Photographers in South Wales. A great sunrise was expected and as it is just 10 minutes from my home I decided to go get the sunrise. In the end I was so cold and wet from being soaked by the wave I had to go home and change and missed the sunrise.Editing
I post process using Photoshop, Luminar and Nik.In my camera bag
This very much depends on what I'm shooting. The bag itself is by Tenba and I love it for comfort and ease of use. For a landscape session I will usually take 16 - 35mm Canon as well as the 24 - 70mm that took this image. I use Lee filters and a Manfrotto tripod.Feedback
I'm not sure I would advise anyone to deliberately get this close to the big waves in the winter but it does make for an interesting image. I do plan to go back and try this again with a longer zoom like a 70 - 200mm Canon.
