Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo along the shoreline of Lake Ontario in Toronto. A mother Swan saw us walking along the beach of and swam over to us only to reveal her three cute babies that she was carrying on her back.

Time

Early in the morning while it was still calm and empty. That seems to be the best time to shoot wildlife in public parks because the animals are most active in the mornings when there is no one else around.

Lighting

The sky was a perfect overcast white, which was defusing the sun behind it. That allowed me to shoot while the baby swans and not only get them perfectly exposed with no harsh shadows, but also to get a smooth pure background of calm lake reflecting the the sky as well. A lot of people think this is a studio shot because it is so well lit but I just got lucky.

Equipment

My trusty Lumix DCG9 with a 100-400mm telephoto lens. That's my favorite setup for wildlife photography because the Micro Four Thirds system allows me to carry such a long focal length in a small and lightweight package.

Inspiration

I always try to get as close as possible to my subject and capture the essence of their being in a single portrait. If I get their eyes and a subtle nuance of emotion from them then it'[s perfect. My photo style changed after viewing Tim Flatch's work, and I use him as a basis with my own unique twist.

Editing

I always shoot RAW to adjust the exposure and white balance afterword's but the only thing I did here was crop in a little closer to show the interaction of the two swans in my photograph

In my camera bag

My Lumix DCG9 body and five lenses; Olympus 75mm 1.8, Olympus 60mm 2.8, Panasonic 100-400mm telephoto and my Sigma 16mm/30mm/56mm 1.4 prime lenses. I also carry extra batteries memory cards and a travel tripod as well.

Feedback

I always shoot my photos as if I am trying to create a painting. There has to be meaning and a story within the picture or else it's just another snapshot. So make sure you focus on the little details and try to understand what characteristics make an animal unique and make them shine.
