Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the back yard of friends of mine. My friends and I sat in lawn chairs, some distance from the nest, and remained very quiet. We caused no disturbance at all for the young birds, or their parents who were not far away.

Time

This was taken in afternoon about 3:00.

Lighting

Due to the location of the Woodpecker's nest, i.e. in an open area, on the east side of he property, it was better to photo the birds in the afternoon.

Equipment

I used my camera with a 150-600mm telephoto lens attached and mounted on a tripod. There was no flash used. There was a lens hood attached to the camera.

Inspiration

I am always inspired by opportunities to capture birds in their natural habitat. My friends had invited me to their yard, so that I would have just such an opportunity. I was excited about getting pictures of the young Pileated Woodpeckers, as I had never even seen the young ones before, let alone being in a place to capture their pictures. I was delighted when both of the young birds decided to view their outside world at the same time. I snapped as many shots as I could of them and was fortunate to have captured this shot. Incidentally, the two youngsters fledged the nest the day after this photo was taken.

Editing

I did some post-processing, as I always do. I use PS and did the usual adjustments, e.g. clarity, texture, dehazing, highlights, shadows. I then crop and adjust curves as a final step. I do not recall exactly what all I adjusted for this particular image. One can assume it would have been those that I mentioned.

In my camera bag

My bag usually includes: Second camera, 24-105 mm lens, a macro lens, some filters, filter holder, shutter release, lens caps. I carry my primary camera with the long lens attached. I also have lens cleaners and wipes with me.

Feedback

It is extremely important when around nesting birds not to disturb a nest in any way. Be quiet, be careful and keep a safe distance.
