Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured from a boat while cruising in a bay along the Gulf of Finland, near Hamina.

Time

It was an unplanned trip on a day that was full of unplanned surprises for my wife and me. We set out nearly two hours prior to sunset. As sunset was approaching and we were headed back to dock, I was able to capture this view and a few other good shots as well.

Lighting

Just the light provided by nature as the day was fading into night.

Equipment

I was using my Olympus EM1 MarkII and my 12-40 2.8 Pro, handheld (on a moving boat) with no filter F7.1 1/1,000.

Inspiration

The clouds, the reflections, the golden glow of the sun peeking through. The scene just spoke to me.

Editing

I use Affinity Photo and really only processed this one minimally. A bit of contrast, clarity and vibrance tweaks but that’s about it.

In my camera bag

Always my EM1 MarkII with my 7-14mm, 12-40mm & 40-150mm 2.8 Pro lenses along with my kit flash and a small tripod when I’m not carrying the full size one.

Feedback

Always look in all directions for the shot. If you’re moving in one direction for a period of time, stop and turn to see what’s behind you. I’ve been pleasantly surprised numerous times by doing this.
