Behind The Lens

Location

Outside near an old water reservoir in Montreal

Time

It was around 2pm in summer time.

Lighting

I used a combination of natural sunlight and strobe lighting.. natural light behind the subject on camera right, and the strobe in front of the subject, camera left.

Equipment

It was shot with a Nikon d750 and a Nikki 50mm 1.8. The strobe was a Westcott fj400 with dual diffusion on a Rapid Box switch Octa-M softbox.

Inspiration

My son models well and I had just purchased my Fj400 strobe and I wanted to test it in a natural environment.

Editing

I used photoshop to clean up the photo, removing my son’s teenage blemishes and darkening the green tone grass while giving a slight purple hue to the gravel to create contrast.

In my camera bag

I always carry my go to 24-120mm Nikkor lens, with the 50mm prime f1.8 lens.

Feedback

Always test the shot without the strobe to set how you want the background to look, then add the artificial lighting.
