I managed to capture this photo of a Black Striped Night Heron in flight at Scherer Park in Long Beach, California. These birds are misnamed, since their stripes are dark blue, but they are particularly beautiful, and it's unusual to catch one in flight (they tend to be lazy, like me). Anyway, I was delighted to catch this memorable image of a fairly rare species that is threatened like so many species by the effects of climate change, which our current president still regards as a scientific hoax. In the foreseeable future, photos may be the only evidence we have of these magnificent birds.
