For 7 years this is the view I got on my drive to work. The place over in the distance in between those mountains is Halfway Bay, a working farm. The lake is Lake Wakatipu. The mountains are so beautiful and I finally decided to try and take a panorama made up of multiple photos. I stitched them together in Lightroom of which I am only learning. Happy with the result I decided to share here on ViewBug.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the edge of Lake Wakatipu and the place in the distance on the left is a working farm called Halfway Bay. It is halfway from Kingston to Queenstown on the South Island of New Zealand.

Time

I love this view. I travelled this road nearly every day for 7 years on my way to work and home again. It is one of my favourite views and changes daily. I took this photo surprisingly at 1pm in the afternoon late Autumn because the lake was so still which does not happen often and often changes quickly

Lighting

I am not one to conform to the norm about what is perfect lighting and what isn't. I am more about what looks great at the time so I took this photo at 1pm in the afternoon which is normally not the best lighting. I think however it is still a great photo and I hope you agree.

Equipment

I used my trusty Canon 70D camera with my 18-135mm lens. I took a series of photos which I later stitched to make a panorama.

Inspiration

I was inspired to take this photo because I wanted to try taking real panorama photos. Not the ones that use the panorama setting on your camera but the ones where you take a series of photos and stitch them all together. This view is one of my favourites so since the lake was calm I decided to try my luck.

Editing

I uploaded my photos into Lightroom and used the Stich function to create a panorama. I used about 3 photos. Then I did a tiny bit of very basic tweeking to bring out the best light in the photo. I am very amateurish with Lightroom so I am happy with the result.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Canon 70d with 2 lenses. My Canon 18 - 135mm lens for landscapes. My Canon Macro lens 60mm for taking close-ups of insects and flowers. I also have a longer lens but do not use that as much anymore now that I have discovered landscapes. I have a couple of graduated filters which are a cheap indistinct brand, 3 spare batteries and at least 2 sim cards, just in case. I have a small carry bag which was a gift from my sister and makes walking with my camera easy. There would be other things I would use if I could afford them, just saying!

Feedback

It's hard for me to give advice except to say get out there and practise. Look on the internet for tips from experts and make up your own opinion about what you like. It is fun to take photos and the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy your images. Digital photos are great because mistakes are easily deleted. If you want to be professional, which I am not, then do a photography course and learn all the right stuff that will help you earn an income. Publish your photos on forums like ViewBug so people can give you feedback. Most of all just have fun.
