Love this, definitely creates a mystical yet somehow earthy feeling; It makes me wonder if this is a campsite, but with that gorgeous lighting, wherever it is, it seems calm and balmy, and I just want to visit!

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at my favorite photo spot on the Texas coast between Surfside and San Luis Pass. It's one of the darkest spots around with dark skies to the south so it's a nice spot for star pictures, and always good for sunrise pictures.

Time

I wanted to take this picture at sunset, but I haven't been somewhere with a good sunset view in a while, so I decided to camp on the beach to be ready for sunrise. Woke up as the sky was just beginning to glow so I had time to get things setup and have breakfast while waiting for the sun to make its appearance in the sky.

Lighting

Clear skies and the sun is providing the only light making a great silhouette. Next time I might try lighting the lantern with dual flashes off to the sides to create a subtle even light on the lantern itself.

Equipment

Nikon D850 with Nikon AF-P Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR Telephoto lens, Manfrotto Carbon Fiber tripod with Manfrotto XPRO Ball Head, Nikon WR-10 Wireless Controller Set, and a cheap lantern from Halloween

Inspiration

This is something I have wanted to photograph for some time, I've seen similar photos online and I love photographing silhouettes already. Capturing the sun is a new challenge.

Editing

My post-processing is with Adobe Lightroom and usually just the basics. For photos like this it is usually just playing with shadows and blacks.

In my camera bag

When I go out with my camera I have a pretty extensive pack as I usually am making a day of it. It could be shooting stars, landscapes, birds and wildlife all in one outing. My kit revolves around my Nikon D850 and my Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens, but also includes a Nikon 85mm macro, Nikon 35mm, Nikon 70-300mm, Samyang 14mm (for nights and milky way photography), two Speedlight flashes, Arca-Swiss L-Bracket, Nikon WR-10 Wireless Remote, Vello Shutterbox Version 2 remote with intervalometer, and I always have a flashlight and a UV flashlight in the bag.

Feedback

If you are capturing silhouettes like this, the sun moves faster than you think. You may not have much time to get things right so take some test shots to get setup before "the moment". If your camera has live view absolutely use it instead of looking through your viewfinder. You never want to look through the viewfinder when photographing the sun.
