Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this image on a lake about an hour from my old home in Southern Arkansas. The lake is actually in Louisiana. And I was standing on a metal walkway over a spillway for the lake. Which made the whole shoot a little more interesting, the water was flowing over the edge of the spillway, right under the metal grate walkway I was standing on.

Time

This shot was taken at sunset around 8pm, during the end of May, so the sun was up a lot longer. This was back when I was first learning photography, and practicing long exposure to shoot sunsets later into the evening, after the sun had fully set.

Lighting

I'm not sure what it was about Southern Arkansas and North Louisiana, but I was fortunate enough to experience some of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. And these sunsets weren't a rare occurrence either, it seemed like they were happening just about every time I went out to shoot photos. Which back then was pretty much every single evening of the week, for the first two years of teaching myself photography.

Equipment

This image was shot on a Canon 7d with a Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5. I used a tripod and a wireless shutter release remote. No other equipment used.

Inspiration

As I stated before, this image was taken when I was first learning photography. Back then I used to just drive around and look for beautiful locations to shoot photos. So with that said, nothing really inspired me, other than my constant drive to learn as much as possible about photography. And thankfully, photography remains my main passion to this very day.

Editing

I used a photoshop preset to enhance the yellow and blue tones in the sky, to better match how my eyes saw the sky that night. I also brightened up the image a small amount so that the bouy's could be seen.

In my camera bag

I just upgraded to a Canon eos rp, full frame, mirrorless camera. So I carry it and my older Canon 7d, if I don't have to carry my bag very far. I am currently only shooting with a Canon 24-70mm f/4L is usm. But in the very near future I will be ordering a Canon rf 24-105mm f4L is. I also carry my dji Mavic Air 2 with me and extra batteries, and filters. I also generally have my Manfrotto tripod with me, along with a flashlight, extra batteries and various filters.

Feedback

The advice I would give for sunset photography, is to never pack it up and head out to soon. Some of the best sunsets I have ever shot, were during the thirty to forty five min after the sun has actually gone down. I like to shoot a long exposure of the sky after it looks like it's a little too dark to actually get a good photo. Something I learned when first learning photography, was that with a shutter remote, and a longer exposure than the camera timer will allow for, will usually create some beautiful sunset images. And when shooting longer exposure sunsets, when water is present, you'll end up with that very soft, smooth looking water surface. So don't be afraid to stick around and shoot for a little while, after everyone else has packed it in and left. Or if you're by yourself, talk yourself into sticking out the shoot just a little longer, you never know what you might end up with later when you go back and look at the images.
