Behind The Lens

Location

There is a train yard in a small downtown area of Tacoma, WA where they had hundreds of blue shipping containers lined up for transporting (I’m assuming). They had since been removing all of the containers, so it was almost completely empty minus one trail stood still on the tracks. A friend of mine loved the spot instantly and pulled his Bug up onto the railroad tracks for me to capture the moment.

Time

Mid afternoon!

Lighting

Definitely a moody shot as the day was overcast with small beams of light showing thru the clouds.

Equipment

Shot on a Canon Rebel T6i using a 50mm 1.8. (Nothing fancy here folks)

Inspiration

This spot really reminds me of the show The Walking Dead. Lots of mood, drowned out reds, and warm tones accompanied by the darker blues of the once present (not shown in this shot) shipping containers. A perfect little apocalypse/moody/stormy vibe.

Editing

Yes! Lots of lighting adjustment to create a very deep but interesting mood that tells a small story and allows viewers to ask some inside questions. I do some color correction, too and had a small amount of haze to bring the “moodiness” to life.

In my camera bag

Always have my 50mm 1.8 ready as it is my first and favorite lens. Next is the 70-200mm 2.8, and then my all time favorite 75-300.

Feedback

Follow the sight lines. Get low and have an image in your mind before clicking the button. But don’t ever be afraid to experiment!! Practice is the best teacher.
