I'm am amateaur photographer in Ottawa, Ontario. This photo was taken out in an open field where I just so happened to catch a glimpse of this interesting little character who darted out into an open field.Time
It was a very cold winter morning. Depending on what kind of animal you're looking to see, odds are that in the morning you'll catch some winding down their day, and others will be just starting it!Lighting
The lighting was fantastic to work with. A lot of people don't like shooting during a gloomy, cold winter day but I beg to differ. The lighting is optimal, the light drizzle of snow creates a soft bokeh in the background and it's just so much fun!Equipment
This photo was taken with a Canon 7D Mark ii paired with a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens.Inspiration
When it comes to smaller creatures, I like to get right down on the ground to witness their perspective. These guys are quite fast and often bolt away at a moments notice, so laying down flat on the ground allows optimal stabilizaion, a unique perspective and most importantly, it reduces any unwanted stress on the subject.Editing
I processed this photo through Adobe Photoshop in order to reduced some of the grain as my ISO was a tad too high. Snowshoe Hares make shooting in Manual a challenge as they zig zag everywhere through dark, dense bushes at one moment, then standing still in a bright open field. In my camera bag
I only ever bring my Canon 7D mark ii camera, Canon 100-440mm ii lens and a spare battery of course! It's the only gear I currently have as I'm quite new to photography, but my next stop is a tripod!Feedback
The biggest lesson that these little guys have taught me is patience. It can take quite some time to capture the right moment, but the key thing is to be ready with your settings and anticipate their sudden movement! Let them relax and ensure that their experience with you is natural.
