Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot during a 3-day trip to Toronto, which was my first time there.

Time

This shot was taken one hour before sunset during an overcast day, thus creating that mystery and foggy look in the sky, almost hiding the top of the buildings.

Lighting

Being shot during an overcast day made the light really uniform on the building.

Equipment

This was shot with my Nikon D610 (full frame) and a Sigma 8-16mm ultra wide lens (not fisheye). No tripod was used.

Inspiration

All the Toronto pictures from YouTuber Peter McKinnon and Toronto photographer Alen Palander.

Editing

Yes! Increased the contrast, removed the saturation of the blue-ish sky to have a better colour contrast with the building. I also changed the tint of the building’s light from yellow to a bit more orange. Last step was to de-haze the sky to increase that foggy look. I only use Lightroom classic for my edits.

In my camera bag

I only have one camera, the Nikon D610, and I usually carry a small Joby tripod. For lenses, I have a 18-300mm for all-purpose travel and wildlife photography, a 50mm and 24mm both at f/1.8, a macro 105mm f/2.8, and the Sigma 8-16mm ultra wide.

Feedback

Always remember to look up! And even if you don’t have a wide angle lens, you can always do a multi-picture composite and merging them all to achieve the same result.
