Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Monument Valley, AZ. This was a serendipitious trip at the tail end of a multi-national parks expedition. On the way home, we realized that we would be passing near Monument Valley, so we decided to take a little several hour side trip. The splendor and beauty of Monument Valley kept us there for 2 days.

Time

This image was taken in the late afternoon. We arrived in the late morning and toured the Valley. We waited til the later afternoon to start out set up for some amazing images.

Lighting

Lighting and time of day was very important for this image. We arrived in the morning, but it was too late to take advantage of the morning light. We decided to stick around for the later afternoon/sunset light. I think it paid off well.

Equipment

Canon 1Dx, 24mmL lens, Gitzo tripod with a RRS ball head, L-bracket for ease of changing from landscape to portrait mode without changing the composition. I took many images in portrait orientation, and portrait stitched panoramas.

Inspiration

The grandeur of Monument Valley lends itself to photographic inspiration!

Editing

I shoot raw, so post processing is a must. I use Photoahop and Camera Raw. I stitched together 7 or 8 portrait orientation shots to create this panorama.

In my camera bag

Canon 1Dx, Canon 5Dsr, 24mmL, 24-70mmL, 70-200mmL, 24-105mmL lenses when shooting landscapes. Various ND filters and graduated filters.

Feedback

Scout you location, and look at all angles. Spend some time looking at different angles and vantage points. Don't be afraid to take some test images in poor light. Just get you composition to your liking, and wait for the right light.
