Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my home studio. It's a room about 10ft x 10ft so space can be challenge.

Time

The thing I love about studio lighting is that it doesn't matter what time of day it is - you can always get the effect you want and there are no distractions.

Lighting

I love short light because it's so flattering to the face and makes the subject feel more mysterious.

Equipment

The was shot with a Sony A7iii and with a 24-70mm lens. I had three lights - main, fill and rim light.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the work of the artist Louis Tresseras. All his images are so emotive and it's such small details that convey the emotion. I wanted to show someone cowed by circumstances. It's in the head that bows down, the eyes that can't look up and the exposed shoulders that curl inward as protection.

Editing

I desaturated the image a little and did a few minor adjustments in Lightroom before exporting to Photoshop. I then cleaned up the image, did some dodge and burning, and colour adjustments.

In my camera bag

I normally try to use prime lenses because the weight of the 24-70mm is a killer. I usually bring it anyway because the quality is amazing and it's such a versatile lens. I'll generally pack a 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm as well as a couple of speed lights just in case.

Feedback

Study body language and find a model who's done some acting. This model is an actor who was incredibly open about herself which really helped bring emotion to the image.
