Behind The Lens

Location

It was shot in my home studio outside of Pensacola, FL.

Time

It was taken mid day as I only use 1 strobe to my left and then frosted French doors to my right to let afternoon fill light in.

Lighting

I wanted a dark, almost mysterious look to this. Somewhere between a painting and maybe a touch of another time.

Equipment

I used my Canon 6D, with my 28-70mm lens. A strobe light with a large softbox was set to my left and put just so, so I could catch the light in his eyes. I rarely use a tripod for portrait work so I can move around freely.

Inspiration

I wanted it to have an "after the party" feel to it, hence the untied tie. Like he had been dressed to the 9's earlier, but now we are feeling more casual.

Editing

I always do my base editing in Lightroom, all the straightening, touch up skin and set my lighting mood I am going for. Then I put it into Photoshop and did some D&B, added texture and the balanced it off with my favorite presets and finally added curves.

In my camera bag

My camera body, usually my 28-70mm lens and either my 70-200mm or my 85mm for outdoor sessions. Then a bunch of extra batteries, triggers, napkins, a couple of safety pins, and a gluten free snack if I am out so long I need to eat something.

Feedback

Play with lighting. Don't be afraid of darkness and use the light to draw your eye where you want it.
