I took this photo in the doorway of my bedroom, my son loves legos but hates his photo taken. I told him to play and ignore me so I could capture a more natural look.Time
I wanted to take a low light image but the evening got away from me, so right before bedtime about 8pm I quickly took a series of shots hoping to get what I had envisioned.Lighting
I put my subject in a dark room and faced him towards the door. I turned the hallway light on so he was front lit with the streaming light. I also new I wanted and interesting composition so I stood back and framed him with the dresser.Equipment
I am a canon girl. I have the Canon 6d Mark ii, and I used the Sigma 35mm lens. No flash or tripod.Inspiration
My sister and I give each other photography challenges, and our challenge was to take low light images. I knew I wanted to capture my son, he is in the stage of his life where he can play legos in his room for hours. I wanted to capture him in his element, with a natural authentic look.Editing
I edit my images in Lightroom, I applied a basic black and white preset, and brought down the shadows around the edges. In my camera bag
I keep it very simple. I have one canon body the 6d Mark ii, I have three prime lenses; 50mm, 35mm, and 85mm. And one zoom lens the Canon 24-105mm. My go to lens is the 35mm 1.4, I can fit the subject in the frame even in tight spaces.Feedback
I love learning the "rules" of photography, then I love to learn how to break them. Don't be afraid of shadow, or low light. Also set the mood for the results you want. If I want connection and laughter, I encourage movement and fun, if I want more calm and moody, I set the scene and almost hide in the background so I'm not distracting.
