Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in Gia Lai province in Vietnam but the paths and trails are very rough, poor, slippery, muddy condition to get there in 3 days very tiring journey. Because it is located in the thick jungle to spend my time on trekking all day long. As you know, I had no idea, nobody for me to ask what's going on this waterfall before I went there in first time. Then, I asked for some of my friends to go. Luckily, they joined me. After my group was survive from the big adventure trip but I was not happy with what I took because I got there in wrong time. I keep it in my mind and I didn't give up getting good shots this place so I decided to come back next year one more time by myself with my preparing carefully. It mean, I spent my time shooting more days there. Finally, I made it and I am extremely happy with what I wanted to photograph.

Time

This picture is one of my favorite image. I remember taking this shot in the morning. It's difficult for me to find a good spot to stand because the strongly cold water level keeps moving. One more thing, the rocks are extremely slippery. After making sure everything safely. I had to use heavy tripod for shooting this long exposure. This was taken on Feb, 2020.

Lighting

I know for sure that I should not take the waterfall with strong light anywhere I got there. I want to avoid big contrast from the sun and the water so I had to wait for right light before shooting waterfall.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D850 with lens 24-120mm, F/4 and Hoya filter. Of course, I must use a heavy tripod to be stably to photograph a long exposure.

Inspiration

I've been loving the reflection so I keep looking for the reflection everywhere I go. That's it.

Editing

I'am always shooting with Raw files. I don't process any special. I always use Lightroom, Photoshop and Camera Raw to process all my images.

In my camera bag

My bag have always had 2 Nikon camera bodies (1 for color + 1 for IR) with 3 lenses Sigma 12-24mm f/4, Nikon 24-120mm f/4, 70-200mm f/2.8 and a few filters with ND, GND

Feedback

In my own opinion, If you're shooting a moving water, you can create stunning white water effects by placing a long exposure. You must use an intensity ND filter or polarizing to reduce reflection and highlights the sky. A good tripod in this case is also essential to ensure sharpness for photos. Water in subdued light can create very beautiful reflection effect.
