Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at a junction between main and residential roads near my then current home in Edmonton, North London, England, UK.

Time

This photo was taken in the early afternoon, on the day after a significant rainstorm had thoroughly drenched the city..

Lighting

The shot features only natural daylight for lighting.

Equipment

This was shot on a Sony DSC HX-350, with a ZEISS Vario Sonnar T* Lens. No other equipment was involved. These shots are great on the fly without a tripod, although I would say its more important to keep your equipment ready and pop out quickly after any significant rainfall.

Inspiration

I had recently been inspired to catch images in water and more specifically those in rainwater puddles, and this was a great find on an opportune day, after a heavy day of urban rainfall followed by overnight drying out. This had resulted in numerous large puddles of standing rainwater and I was keenly determined to capture some beautiful examples of this juxtaposition of images-in-reflection and urban environments. Creativity-wise, I was interested in the actual reflection itself, and took a series of similar shots featuring various subjects (the resulting tree captures were my personal favourite)

Editing

I rarely edit or process any of my images and this is one of the rare exceptions. I took the shot in Portrait and then rotated it through 180 degrees to achieve the image. I flipped the image 180 as I was interested to see how the further element of reflected reversal would impact the overall effect.

In my camera bag

I normally travel with my Sony DSC Compact Digital Camera, a small power bank and long robust USB lead, a cleaning cloth for my lens, and sometimes a small lightweight, portable and robust tripod. This allows me to be ready to capture many quick and fleeting moments of urban / city life. I do however use other cameras. currently mainly 1 of three Canon models, in order to undertake actual photographic assignments, but I enjoy the flexibility of a reliable compact camera for quick urban jaunts.

Feedback

Keep an eye on the weather! - I find that the times before and after rainstorms to be some of the best moments to capture magnificent urban nature-based shots and provide truly unique opportunities for creating amazing interesting natural images. When you see a suitable body of water, move around to see all the potential reflections available in order to find any interesting views not straightaway visible. This was also a chance to make full use of my ideas about Mirror Images, Reflection Photography, while trying to capture a juxtaposing theme regarding "Urban vs Nature - Water". Having an idea for a theme can help you to avoid getting side-tracked into trying to stage a specific effect rather than capturing what can naturally. The image could be used to convey a house actually contained within a puddle, or a view through a portal of some kind, so I would suggest to always take the shot first, and let yourself consider how you interpret it after at least a few days, so as to see it with fresh eyes.. and Don't Try Too Hard - Let others interpret it as they interpret it
