This is an image of a female humpback whale. She was traveling with a very curious calf which continuously attempted to sneak around her to approach and investigate our boat. I hung over the side of the boat with my camera and used my hand to crate a small wake as we travelled to capture this unique shot.

I had to shoot based on the histogram so I was able to balance the low light underwater with the brightness above. In post I needed to balance them out a bit as well as white balance the underwater portion separately from the above portion as you start to lose color even in shallow depths.In my camera bag

A lot of things need to come together to capture an image like this. You need somewhat flat water, you need the subject to be the right distance away, you need enough light and low turbidity in the water, you also need a large enough dome port to split the image and a little bit of luck.
