Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Narara Island Marine National Park on the southern shore of the Gulf of Kutch, Jamnagar, Gujarat, India.

Time

I clicked the image at around 3 PM.

Lighting

I took the photo outdoors in natural light. Narara island is the very tip where the landmass ends and the Arabian Sea begins. And Gujarat being a Western State in India, the sun rises late during the winters (6:30 AM-7:00 AM) but sets earlier, around 5:30 PM, than in summers. We were visiting during the winter and at 3 PM, the sunlight had mellowed considerably, without being too bright and harsh. The seashore was clear of any other tall object and, therefore the natural light was even over the vast expanse of the sandy shore with no shadows to mar it. I positioned myself in a way that my shadow would not be cast on the sand.

Equipment

Just my beloved and faithful Canon PowerShot SX400 IS.

Inspiration

The Arabian sea had receded miles away at low tide. As I looked around, there was nothing but the patterned, wet sand creating a rippling effect in the late afternoon sun which stretched as far as the eye could see until it met the sea. Since we reached Narara, much later in the day, there weren't as many tourists crowding the place. The high tide had receded only a couple of hours and the crowd had moved soon after, headed out to the sea to observe marine life in the natural aquarium. The pattern created by the receding water was held in place by the wet sand and had not been disturbed by the footfalls of the other visitors. The only prints were ours and the wet sand resisted any hard impression of the shoes. The mesmeric image of the seashore is still imprinted on my mind.

Editing

Yes, some. I enhanced the photo and and to converted to monochrome.

In my camera bag

Only my Canon PowerShot SX400 IS, an extra memory card, an extra charged battery, and my cell phone just in case I run into trouble with the battery or the memory cards become full. But, I am fastidious about unloading the photos in the evenings that I have taken during the day so that I have enough free space at any time. I don't like taking photos with a mobile camera unless I have absolutely no other option. But, it makes me feel safe to know the mobile can be used if there is a mishap, since it is there any way for the calls.

Feedback

I consider myself a beginner. I don't think I am in any position right now to give advice. I feel honoured that Viewbug thinks I stand a chance to be featured. I have only just begun to learn what good photography means and the importance of post-processing. Photography is a late hobby that I picked up and it'll take a lifetime of learning to improve as much as I want to. However, I work hard to improve my skills constantly. I take photos of everything, no matter how ordinary or mundane, because it helps hone my skills. I take a couple almost everyday. I take photos of where I belong and what my country offers me. I am proud of the subjects that abound in my environment which allows me an opportunity to create my niche, my way. I consider myself lucky to be in Viewbug. Studying the award-winning, featured, and curated photos here gives me an opportunity to understand how the minds of the great photographers work. How a photo is conceptualized, what effort goes behind the execution, how far the creativity is explored, the lighting, the subject, the angles, the props, the post-processing and much more. It's also not only about learning, though. It's also about being mesmerized by the beauty of a great photo. I try not to miss a chance to read what the photographers have to say about their photos, their advice, and tips on improvements. And I take constuctive criticism in my stride when it comes my way and try and apply it to the next photo I take because learning is incomplete without it.
