Location
I took this photo in my studio. It’s a small space, but I have some black backdrops and various lighting solutions.
Time
The studio has blackout curtains, so time of day wasn’t important. I’m able to completely control the lighting.
Lighting
The outside light was blacked out, letting me control all the lighting. I used two off camera flashes set up at opposite ends of the shoe. One had a blue gel and one had a pink gel. The shoe was placed in half an inch or so of water in a pizza pan. So the lights had to be angled in a way that I didn’t see the flashes reflection off the water.
Equipment
I used a Canon 1DX Mark ii with a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 lens. The camera was mounted to my manfrotto tripod. I used two off camera flashes with colored gels.

Inspiration
My friend actually designed this shoe for a women’s golf brand. The cool and unique vibe of the graffiti design made me want to take an equally unique photo. Since the shoe is black and white I thought the colored gels could introduce color without clashing with any elements of the shoe. The standing water was something I tried for fun and fell in love with.
Editing
Very minimal post processing really. The 1DX Mark ii is a fantastic camera and it captured the colors from the gels perfectly. Much more work went into preproduction than the post.
In my camera bag
For more serious shoots I use the Canon 1DX Mark ii most of the time, but will use my Fuji X-T2 on occasion, especially on family photo shoots. I love my Canon 85mm prime lens and my Tamron 24-70. On the Fuji I use the 50mm f2 the most. I have a Fuji X100F I take almost everywhere with me for daily shooting.
Feedback
Try everything. When I started shooting these shoes I had no clue I would sit them in water. But I like reflections and wanted to try it. My original plan for this photo was to drop paint on a white board behind it. Let your brain attack a photo from totally different angles and see what works.
