I was heading to Vancouver's VanDusen Botanical Garden and noticed this Magnolia tree outside, as I was driving into the parking lot. After parking I walked back out to the tree and this was one of the shots I got. I liked the perspective of looking up into the bloom.Time
This was taken about 9am, a bit before the garden opened. I always arrive a bit early in case something catches my eye en route.Lighting
This was shot entirely with natural light. It was bit overcast so the light wasn't too harsh.Equipment
This was shot handheld, with a Nikon D850 and a Sigma Art 70-200mm (at 200). Settings were 1/500th, f4.5 and ISO 100.Inspiration
First off, I love magnolias; I find their color so magical and their structure very photogenic. Once I stood under the tree, the perspective "demanded" to be shot and I simply obliged. That being said, it was a good reminder to look ALL around us when we're shooting, including looking straight up.Editing
Processed in Lightroom and mostly just to intensify the pinkish/magenta tones. In my camera bag
My usual kit includes my Nikon D850, Nikon 24-110mm, Sigma Art 70-200, and either my Nikon 300mm PF or Nikon 500mm PF. Additionally, I almost always take a tripod, extra memory cards, cleaning gear, etc. In short, my kit includes nothing out of the ordinary.Feedback
As alluded to earlier, keep your head on a swivel. Once you have your intended shot, take a look in other directions, including up and down, because a great shot may be staring right at you!
