Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the kitchen island at home. The background is a wall we have painted in blackboard paint so it makes a lovely backdrop for photos ????

Time

It is late afternoon some time in March or April I believe. I was practicing some techniques and just having some fun experimenting for a foundation degree project ????

Lighting

I used the two hanging lights we have above the kitchen island which give off a yellow /orange glow which brings out the colour of the wood slab i took it on, the flash i used was the built-in flash on my camera which is faulty. So, having to time it with sending the icing sugar down was a nightmare. My poor younger sibling who had helped me with this shoot ????

Equipment

I used a Canon 1300D with an ordinary prime lens, built-in flash and a borrowed tripod (cuz i broke mine ????)

Inspiration

I enjoy experimenting and having fun with my work. Ive been an aspiring photographer for about 15 years (i was about 5 years old when i decided i wanted to pursue photography) and ive never changed that aspiration I never fully plan a shoot unless i either have models, im on location, or its a stricter time limit or its for someone else. A lot of the shoots i do are for whatever certificate im working towards (this was for my 1st year of my foundation degree) But i like to have a little fun and sometimes that includes running with an idea when i dont necessarily know what i want the outcome to be. I just knew i wanted to make some editorial style work for my portfolio and chose to so this. I never regret any of the experiments i do, some of my best work is through experiments and having a bit of fun.

Editing

I think the most i did was crop it and bring the contrast up a little bit, i do not enjoy post production and prefer to get it as right as it can be in camera because i find post production a rather lengthy process, i spend far too many hours in front of the computer trying to make an image the best it can be, so i try and limit that before i go to far editing an image.

In my camera bag

At the moment i keep my DSLR with me and my mini Polaroid because im loving the aesthetic and style it has I dont always take my DLSR with me, im prone to falling over a lot and that camera is worth too much to risk it ????

Feedback

I find when shooting stuff like freezing motion and capturing that moment its all about experimenting. You can never fully plan for that moment because anything could happen, a light bulb goes, the flash doesn't work, you could become trigger happy when you shoot and completely miss the shot (far too specific but i do that a lot) ???? Also for something like this specifically, try to use something heavier i used a mix of icing sugar and flour because flour is a denser product so it would show up more on camera ????
