Behind The Lens

Location

One of my favorite loves is taking puppy pictures in a friends beautiful flower garden in Woodstock VT, the lush foliage and bursts of colors complement the startling white fur. The babies love all the room to run, flowers to play with and perfect napping spots for when they tire. I began taking photos of puppies and dogs as they are so special to me and I wished to capture all their moods and antics. Although I am a long ways from being a pro I truly enjoy capturing all those special moments.

Time

This shot was taken mid morning among a large clump of Black Eyed Susans on a slightly overcast day, waiting later would have put the sun higher in the sky and taken away from the mystique of the deep layers.

Lighting

Because of the garden location and subjects I needed diffused but plenty of natural light to slightly penetrate the greenery yet keeping the deep dark green behind the puppy.

Equipment

The only equipment involved was a Nikon D5100 with an 18/55 lens.

Inspiration

Whenever possible I take puppies to this fantastic garden and let them romp, it is amazing to watch them play. My favorite part is always when they start tiring and look for a sweet place to nap, borrowing among the flowers with sleepy eyes. This little girl "Kesa" had played her heart out and was ready to rest so I followed to see where she would choose. The golden flower and emerald foliage framed her perfectly and exposed her hideout.

Editing

There was very little post processing, slight contrast and color changes but the bones of the image were strong enough to need very little.

In my camera bag

My bag is pretty light in general, my Nikon D5100 with an 18/55 lens and a second of the same with a 55/200 lens. Although I have a tripod and filters available I have never actually used any of them, I love taking action shots of pets and wildlife so find myself always moving. My dream is a longer lens to capture some of the waterfowl action and dog activities that are at more of a distance.

Feedback

Patience! When shooting a litter of pups I plan on three hours of following them around, point and shoot. I typically keep the setting on multiple shots and automatic so not to miss any of the action as they are very fast so focusing is not an option in this setting. The best part is to just be happy and enjoy every moment of a perfect day of sunshine, flowers, taking pictures and of course puppies!
