Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the rocky coast from below the Portland Head Lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth

Time

On the last day of my trip to Portland, ME I left just after lunch to venture to this infamous landmark.

Lighting

My goal here was to capture more than the lighthouse. Given its prominence it’s well know, so I aimed to capture some movement and mood within the photo to help it stand apart.

Equipment

Nikon D5200 with a Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5

Inspiration

I love exploring well known landmarks as well as obscure places when I travel. I made it a point to map this out on my way home to try out my new wide angle lens.

Editing

I enhanced some of the shadows and hues within the photo and turned it black and white, but this was minimally touched in post processing.

In my camera bag

My 2 Nikon bodies, my wide angle lens, and a prime 50mm are always in my bag no matter where I travel.

Feedback

Never be afraid to try the “lesser” angles. Be patient and explore the world around you, find what clicks (get it, ha) for you and then find a way to express that to others - even if it’s in a way that’s not normal or widely accepted. Your photography is your story.
