Pictured here is a shot of the night sky over the Bodie Island Lighthouse in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This lighthouse is very similar to the Cape Hatteras lighthouse, such that it employs a distinctive black and white stripe. The difference is that Bodie Island light has a horizontal stripe whereas Cape Hatteras has more of a diagonal pattern.

Construction on the current structure was completed way back in 1872, and is one of only a handful of brick tower lighthouses that remain in operation in the United States. Bodie Island Lighthouse is also one of a few lighthouses that still uses an original first-order Fresnel lens. *
