Location
I'm currently on a long mission to hike every national park in the United States. On this day, I set out on a 10 mile loop through Pinnacles National Park in Paicines California. This photo was taken by the reservoir on the bear gulch trail.Time
This picture was taken in February. I set out at about 6 am, before sunrise. I believe I reached this point in my hike around 8 am so about an hour after sunrise.Lighting
The sun was still low in the sky behind us allowing the mountain to shadow over the reservoir and the pinnacles to be fully lit in sunlight.Equipment
This was taken handheld on my Nikon D3400 with the 18-55 mm kit lens.Inspiration
It was really just a view I had to take a photo of. I live in Columbus but I'm originally from the Pittsburgh area. When you enter the Fort Pitt tunnel on your way into the city the scenery is very mundane. When you exit the tunnel on the other side you get this sudden jaw dropping view of the city that just seems to come out of nowhere. This was like that. When exiting the Bear Gulch Cave in Pinnacles, this stunning scene just kinda slaps you and stops you in your tracks. My hiking buddy and I sat near here and watched the reactions of other hikers as they stepped out into the light and saw this view of the pinnacles in the distance reflecting crystal clear off of the water.Editing
I do my best to only make minor adjustments to my photos. One of the best things about going on these little adventures is seeing these naturally beautiful places. I want my images to be a reflection of the actual experience. In my camera bag
For the sake of being lightweight while hiking, I typically just carry my Nikon d3400 with two Nikon kit lenses, an 18-55 mm and a 55 - 300 mm. I keep the camera secured to my chest with a Skout harness. It allows me to walk, run, scramble, or climb while keeping my camera easily accessible.Feedback
Just don't be afraid of adventure. Half of the fun is the journey. You'll see the most amazing, inspiring things while you're out there exploring.
