Behind The Lens

Location

I actually both the photos in the entryway of my house.

Time

It was late at night so I was forced to use the lights in my entryway.

Lighting

Since it's a composite, I made sure that I positioned myself the same way I positioned my dog so the lighting was the same for both of us.

Equipment

The photo of my dog was easy and I simply used my Canon EOS R body and my 50 mm lens. For the photo of myself, I used the same camera, lens and setting, but I added a tripod and a remote.

Inspiration

I was working my way through a photography course and was assigned a photo that was "The same, but different." My dog and eye both have brown eyes so I wanted create an image showcasing that. As my dog tend to turn towards me when I'm next to her, attempting a photo of our heads so close together without someone to direct her attention towards the camera, a composite seemed the best way to get the image I wanted.

Editing

I did very little post processing in lightroom. Some simple adjustments to make sure the bring out the eyes and brighten the image a little. Most of the work was done after that in photoshop. I did a fairly simple composite by layering the images and erasing where I needed to on the top image. I did some blending, blurring, and darkening between our two faces and that's how I got the final image.

In my camera bag

I like to keep it fairly simple unless I know I'm going to need a lot more gear. I always have my Canon EOS R body, and my 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses. I also keep a medium sized reflector in my bag, but I don't pack any lighting unless I know I'll be shooting in an area where I'll definitely need it. I tend to shoot a lot of dogs so my bag is also full of different sound makers, and of course treats to pay my models!

Feedback

The biggest thing I would suggest is to make sure your subjects are photographed in the same area using the same lighting. This way they'll have similar shadows and catchlights. It will make it look so much more natural when you put the images together and it'll mean a lot less post processing.
