Location
This photo was taken while walking through San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. San Miguel is a city filled with amazing architecture, including so many unique windows and doors.Time
This photo was taken later in the afternoon - around 4 pm.Lighting
The natural light was sufficient for my purposes. In my mind, the highlights of this particular door - the details, design and pattern, that golden hand - could be captured on camera without any enhancement techniques.Equipment
This image was shot with a hand-held Canon EOS 1300D camera.Inspiration
El Centro, the heart of San Miguel de Allende, is typical of many historical Mexican towns and cities in that its doors provide a glimpse - sometimes the only glimpse - into what lies beyond. In San Miguel, first settled by Spanish colonialists in 1542, doors have served to protect, and to keep secret what was behind those high walls. Doors are a declaration of status. And most definitely a declaration of personality. The day I took this image I was inspired to try and capture the heart and personality of El Centro and San Miguel by capturing its entranceways. When I spotted that golden hand, framed by the detail of the dark door, I immediately saw the shot in my mind's eye. What attracted me was the sheer simplicity of this shot and dare I say, the seeming effortlessness in taking it.Editing
Except for slight cropping, there was no post-processing involved in this shot. That is what I enjoy about it. The detail, the design, the minimum of color all come together to create a simple, yet in my opinion, striking image that can stand on its own.In my camera bag
In my bag, you'll always find my Canon EOS 1300D, telephoto and wide angle lens and some filters.Feedback
Some subjects lend themselves to being captured in their entirety; most of my images of the doors of San Miguel display pretty much the whole entranceway. Stay attuned to focusing in on details, as well as the "big picture." As a creative incentive to yourself as a photographer, consider going out one day to create a collection of thematic images. Individually, and as a whole, they can serve as a reminder of a day well-spent as a photographer and explorer.
