Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was shot at home on my living room floor. He was only 10 weeks old and 2 of them in our family. Even though he got flashed from day one he wasn't used to stay still more than a few seconds. I had a glass table top on the floor, a small light stand with a beauty dish and a tripod ready.
Time
I had to set up the scene early in the evening. He wasn't housebroken yet and I knew that he would fall asleep almost anywhere after a pee in the evening. Setting up earlier gave him a chance to get relaxed with the glass tabletop on the floor. At 22:39 I helped him onto the tabletop and he layed down and was almost asleep when I moved the light stand slightly. He lifted his head up and I started talking to him while trying to get a focus.
Lighting
The glass tabletop isn't really big so I knew the lighting had to be tight. And to keep the sleepy mood I chose a 40 cm ( 15 inch ) beauty dish with a grid. On a small light stand with a Godox QT600 I could move it around with one hand and still have my camera in the other one. Placed it center and angled down a bit with the lens right under against the lightstand.
Equipment
For this image I chose the Canon 7D mark II and the 70-200mm f/4L. It's a light combination that I can hold with one with hand if need. The tripod was a Manfrotto MK190GOA4TB-BH, to be precise. A Godox QT600 II flash, 40 cm beauty dish with a grid. The light stand was a Godox Witstro 40-85 cm.
Inspiration
This dog breed, Dogue de Bordeaux, grows 1.5-2 kgs per week the first few months. I have never seen a reel reflective image with one of these and knowing that I have this glass table top, undercoated with a blue'ish tint, and he was still small enough .. it was meant to be.
Editing
This could have been straight out of camera. Besides lifting the shadows a bit and emphasising the eyes in Lr the rest was cleaning the glass for hairs in Photoshop.
In my camera bag
My bag is always more or less fully packed. There is my Canon 7D Mark II with a Canon 70-200mm f/4, my old Canon 60D body, the Canon 50mm f/1.8II and a Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM. The latter is not especially good at one thing but okay for many things .. like a Swiss Army Knife. I have my tripod and a small bag with two 600EX II-RT and a Godox PB960 Power Pack if needed.
Feedback
If you want to capture something similar you need to plan ahead and know when it's time. At this age, 10 weeks old, dogs are rarely still more than a few seconds. And when they are still they are sleeping and should not be disturbed! So plan in between like a pee outside and a place to fall asleep afterwards.
