Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in China

Time

It was taken early in the morning. I was waiting to photograph a brown shrike when I saw this Asian Swallowtail flitting around

Lighting

It was an over cast but slight bright morning

Equipment

Canon 50d and wait for it a 600mm F4 with 2 extension tubes, Gitzo tripod

Inspiration

Being Scottish I was quite surprised to find thistles in China and even more surprised to see this beautiful swallowtail land on it. I walked around the thistle looking for a nice background and eventually thought the grass and trees made the best one

Editing

Not really I removed a little piece of extra leaf at the bottom left as it was distracting

In my camera bag

These days, Canon 1DX, 100mm macro, 600mm f4, 24-105mm

Feedback

You need to get up early for butterflies as the warmer it gets, the more active they are. Patience is a good virtue, don't go chasing them. Spend time observing them and watch to see if there is a pattern in their movement. Usually you find they visit the same spot, so you can set up your camera and tripod and wait.
