Location
I took this picture in an area called "Weerterbos" in the south of the Netherlands. It was beginning October, during mating season.Time
I arrived in my hiding place very early in the morning, it was about 5 am. You need to be fully prepared and ready to take your pictures before the deer come out of their night shelter to graze. Any sound would scare them away. According to the weather forecast it was going to be a beautiful, sunny Autumn day, so my hopes were up high.Lighting
I had been in my hiding place for a while and waited patiently for the sun to come up. I knew that the open space in the forest I had my eye on was a popular area for the deer in the morning. I had seen them there before. I heard the deer coming towards me in the distance. Then the sunrays started shining through the trees, and as if they were the stars in my play, the deer stept into the sunbeams, ready for me to photograph them. It was a moment I will never forget, it was awesome!Equipment
I used my Sony A700, a 70-200 F2.8 lens, no tripod and certainly no flash, which would scare the deer and also ruin the beautiful light that mother nature gave me for taking this picture.Inspiration
I love taking pictures in nature. The only chance you normally have of photographing deer is during mating season. Then they are less shy. I knew that if I was lucky enough, if everything came together, like the weather, the location and the deer, I could make great pictures. That was my inspiration, I just wanted to make that photo!Editing
I processed it in Photoshop (I shoot in RAW), I dehazed it in order to have more clarity and saturated the colors a bit.In my camera bag
For shots in poor light circumstances I use my Sony A7SII, for action photography (I photograph lots of dogs) I use the Sony A6300, which takes an action series at a very high speed. I have a 18-70 wide angle lens, a 90mm macro lens, which is also great for portraits, a 50mm 1.8 lens and my pride and joy is the Sony 70-200 F2.8 G-lens. I have a tripod, a Lee ND1000 filter and some Nissin flashes.Feedback
Be patient! Everything must fall into place and you need a fair amount of luck for that. But believe me, it is worth the waiting. My camera settings for this shot were: Aperture: F5.6, Exposure: 1/1600, Focal length: 140mm, ISO: 1000.
