Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at an Italian restaurant called "Scaddabush." Indoor lighting is not my favourite but I made it work for this shot! This was taken with my iPhone 11 Pro Max; I'm quite proud of how this turned out.

Time

Since this is a restaurant photo, this was taken during dinner. I ordered a cappuccino with my dessert. One of the things I love is food photography. Thanks to COVID, I did a lot more of it, especially taking photos of the food I cooked/baked. As this was taken at night, the restaurant's dim lighting made it even more an evening photo.

Lighting

When you see a coffee photo, you immediately think of a cafe. Since I wasn't at a cafe, I wanted to capture the idea that coffee is enjoyed at various times of the day. As much as I don't like indoor/restaurant lighting, the dark background actually helped. As this is an iPhone photo - I turned off the flash and edited it to avoid the glares you get with phone camera flash.

Equipment

I just used my iPhone 11 Pro Max for this. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

People who know me, know that I like to take food photos everywhere I go, especially when I travel around the world. The iPhone camera is a great camera if you know how to use it all of its features. I'm also a coffee lover - combine that with my love for photography, and this shot was born. It reminds me of my trips to Italy, sitting in street cafes and sipping coffee. Even at night, you'll see people having an espresso or cappuccino at cafes, and restaurants. Since I haven't travelled much during the pandemic, food photos that remind me of places I've been have been helpful to stay motivated. And it also helped me improve my food photography skills.

Editing

There are so many phone apps you can use like Lightroom Mobile or Snapseed. For this photo, I made use of the camera app on the iPhone. This photo was taken using the Portrait mode. When editing in portrait mode, there's a feature called spotlight you can use. That's pretty much what I used to edit this photo. I reduced the shadows for a more dramatic background, increased the sharpness so you can see the detail of the coffee topping. Lastly I added a slight vignette to round out the photo.

In my camera bag

I shoot with a Canon 70D. In my bag, I carry a 50mm lens, 18-155 lens, 85mm lens. Depending on what I'm shooting, I'll also have my starter camera (Canon T3i) as a backup. It's come in quite handy. These lenses have been great for my portrait, landscape, food and travel photos.

Feedback

Depending on how old your phone is, phone cameras are great. I find that most people know one or two features of the camera app - taking the photo and maybe the crop feature. Take the time to get to know the features of your phone camera, you'll be surprised at what you can do with just your phone. There are several YouTube videos that talk about phone photography if you want a guided tour. Lightroom Mobile and Snapseed are also good (and free!) apps to use to edit your photos. I use these as well as the iPhone camera app. Like all things in photography, practice makes perfect. Practice taking shots with your phone at different angles, and lighting. And then practice editing them with these apps or the phone app. You'll be amazed how easy it is to take great phone photos!
