Behind The Lens

Location

I was returning to Edmonton along the Yellowhead highway, a stretch of road that had been several decades since last visiting. I was keeping my eyes open for interesting shots and found this old house and shed nestled in the woods and could only imagine what it once was.

Time

The lighting was almost perfect in the late morning to show the remarkable details of the house and shed.

Lighting

The natural lighting was good for the shot, muted nicely by the cloud cover. I processed using high dynamic range to make the blue sky pop through the clouds.

Equipment

My Sony SLT A65 camera with Sony 18-250mm zoom lens was used to take this hand held shot.

Inspiration

I love taking photos of old buildings and structures as they offer a glimpse of early days. I saw this house as a reminder of those pioneers who set out across Canada to make a new life.

Editing

I used the raw HDR processing function to create a 3 image split to bring out more of the blue in the sky and show the weathered wood of the buildings.

In my camera bag

On this occasion my camera kit was pretty meager with the camera, lens and some spare memory cards. I had left my extra 100-300mm and 15-24 mm zoom lenses, tripod, crystal balls and filters at home as this was not my usual trip that involves photography.

Feedback

I always like to tell others to keep your eyes open when travelling. You may never get the chance to be in the same place ever again so take what shots you can. In some cases, it may only serve as a memory of what you saw, but in others you might surprise yourself with a shot you can truly be proud of.
