Location
This photo was taken at the pedestal behind the Lincoln Memorial, DC. The awesome model is leaning against one of the pillars.Time
Morning around 10 am. We were supposed to do a wintry shoot but the weather this year has been more unpredictable than the stock market. And we ended up doing a coffee shoot instead.Lighting
Due to the overcast, there were no harsh shadows and the reflection from the lincoln memorial acted as a gorgeous reflector.Equipment
Sony A7iiiInspiration
I wanted to just focus on the model and zoom in right on her face and her expression of enjoying her drink with a nostalgic look on her eye. The arm over her face created leading lines which is my formula to success.Editing
Used Skylum's luminar 3 at applied one of the created presets to get this effect. Brighten up the light shadows and darken the deep shadows (increase the contact), add warmth to give it a nostalgic feel and straighten the pic.In my camera bag
I travel light. I have the camera body sony a7iii, the kit lens, a cheap zoom lens, and a LED light. Sometimes I will also carry an external flash or a lens ball.Feedback
The national mall area in DC is a great place to get a good portrait. Always look for elements of separation. A few I have found are the aligned trees next to the reflecting pool, behind the lincoln memorial, reflection in the reflecting pool itself and the pillars in the lincoln memorial. While taking this image, i was focused purely on leading lines and depth of field. The first step is always the vision and second is the composition. Talking the photograph is just an action, making the photograph is what makes it special for me.
