Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Munich, Germany from the pavement leading to the entrance of the "Hypo-Hochhaus".

Time

It was a wintery afternoon with occasional snow showers.

Lighting

I felt the the dark mood and the clouds would contrast well with the silvery facade of the building.

Equipment

I took the photo handheld with my Nikon D750 with a 14mm f 2.8 lens at ISO 100.

Inspiration

My goal was to get a dramatic shot that was emphasised by the wide lens and a low angle. I also looked for some leading lines to draw the viewers to the structure of the building.

Editing

After some basic adjustments in Lightroom (white balance, sharpness) I used Photoshop for some dodge and burn to highlight the structure the building. I also removed a distraction form the background (construction crane).

In my camera bag

I usually have my Nikon D750 or my newer Z6 in my bag. Over the years I found out that I get the best results when I only use a prime lens for a special shooting. I like my 14mm f 2.8 for drama and finding new angles in confined spaces. On the Z6 i love my 35mm and 50mm f 1.8 for architecteral shots. When I see some great clouds I sometimes also pack a tripod and some ND filters in my bag. For sport and animal shots I use my 70mm - 200mm f 2.8 which gives me greater flexibility when I can't move much to change the frame.

Feedback

For shooting a dramatic picture of a building it is necessary to do some scouting before you actually shoot. What are the key features? Where can I find leading lens? What angle should i use to emphases the hight? From which place can I safely shoot? Than you just have to wait for the right weather conditions and take your picture.
