If you are passionate about castles, the Loire Valley is your place: an iconic region throughout Europe where thousands of chateaux and fortresses dating from the 10th century onwards endure; and as their lights come on, you will be taken back into an enticing evening of the French Renaissance court.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Chambord (Loir-et-Cher, France), where we can find the largest château in the Loire Valley: the Château de Chambord.

Time

I arrived there with enough time to find the perfect spot to shoot the castle symmetrically and waited for the last minutes of the blue hour, to get that deep intense cold hue in the sky matching with the warm lights that were lit inside the building.

Lighting

I wanted to give my image a "fairytale" look, as these castle is one of the most distinctive French Renaissance architecture examples. The blue hour mood and the lights inside the building made me imagine a royal ceremony was being held inside, as there must have been back in the XVIII th century.

Equipment

The image was shot on a Canon EOS 6D with a wide angle lens (Tamron 15-30mm) on my Gitzo tripod. Was a pretty simple shot.

Inspiration

Actually, it was the own building architecture what really inspired me. I love how it blends traditional French medieval structures with classical Renaissance aesthetics and the fact that it is so well conserved really draws you back to the XVIII th century.

Editing

I always post-process my image to enhance what I managed to get in the field. In this case, I had to blend the night sky stars with the blue hour sky, as I wanted the stars to look bigger and brighter.

In my camera bag

I never get out without my Canon EOS 6D and my Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8, which is my prime lens. Also I try to keep near my Gitzo carbon fiber tripod, which is the best companion I have to nail the sharpness of my shots. I use some other lenses and also a complete NiSi filters system, but only when it is necessary. Though I have the best bag I could have, my Fstop, I try to keep weight under control.

Feedback

Always plan your shots but be ready to witness how things can quickly change your plans... and REACT. I love to plan my shots but I expect things not to happen as I have thought before: this is like a training for me, as it keeps me awake and ready to make quick decisions to make the most out of my work in the field.
