Behind The Lens

Location

I don't have a studio, but I have some of the equipment needed for one so when I want to take a picture I transform the living room into a studio. The advantage of an improvised studio is that it causes you to find new lighting possibilities every time because the subjects are also unique.

Time

I had finished having lunch and enjoying the coffee, so my idea came ... My equipment is almost always ready for attack, I only need some time to prepare the scene. In this case I needed about 45 minutes. For more than 10 minutes I had to choose a cup from the dozens of mugs I have in the collection. I wanted to make a monochrome photo, but the white mug was the only one that I liked the most

Lighting

I could not use natural light, the table was far from the window so the only possibility was artificial light, so I turned to the flash and reflective panel.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D3S, although it's old, it's still my favorite. As a lens I used Nikkor 24-70 / 2.8 although we oscillated between this and a Sigma Art of 35 / 1.4. As the light I preferred only a SB900 flash placed on a stand on the left and a reflector panel on the right.

Inspiration

I was trying to choose a new mug from which to drink coffee and so I found a bag of coffee beans and an old coffee filter bought from Italy. I had been planning for such a photo for a while and now I had the time, the accessories and the idea. "Ok" I told myself, "after I finish my coffee I'll start with the set-up".T his photo is the result.

Editing

I always use Photoshop and Dashboard 4. In this case I used it for crop, to intensify the tones and reduce the blue flash and to accentuate the details. I don't use RAW, I always shoot JPG. I know it takes a little more work in post processing but I prefer that.

In my camera bag

My equipment is quite bulky, Nikon D3 / D3S and Nikon D3200 (for emergency only and video). Nikkor 24-70 / 2.8, Nikkor 70-200 / 2.8, Sigma Art 35 / 1.4, Nikkor 50 / 1.8, Nikkor 18-70 / 3.5-5.6.(for emergency only), Nikon SB900, 3 SB800, SB600 and Godox AD360 and lots of other accessories, Phottix triggers, umbrellas, soft boxes, reflective panels, backgrounds.

Feedback

It is difficult to give an advice, each one photographs in his own way, except that if you do not like the result, do not give up, change the angle, the lens, the set-up. Wait for 5-10 minutes and try again ... Patience brings satisfaction.
